Overview
Design and development of a new website for Pittsburgh-based artist, Elise Adibi. The primary goal was to show her full body of work and exhibitions, not just recent paintings, since the artist did not have gallery representation. I worked directly with the artist to outline site goals, information architecture, and recommended modern web technologies to achieve a tactile and exciting experience of her work. The final result was a minimalist site that focused on the artist’s colorful paintings and encouraged viewers to explore the breadth of her work and exhibitions.
Project Goals
  1. Showcase artist’s full body of work and exhibitions in an organized and attractive manner.
  2. Allow viewers to get “up close and personal” with each work to replicate real life viewing as much as possible.
  3. Organize paintings under series categories to allow easier browsing and viewing of related pieces.
  4. Link artworks and exhibitions, so users can see where each work has been shown, as well as get more detail about a series that was shown in a specific exhibition.
  5. Focus on the art, but design a visually pleasing and interesting site for viewers to explore her work.
Elise Adibi is a visual artist who works with natural ingredients, incorporating essential oils, natural pigments, and minerals into her paintings. The sensory quality of her work demands in-person viewing to fully appreciate the texture, smell, and size of her paintings. It was important for her website to replicate this experience as fully as possible within the limitations of the web. The homepage features a high resolution full screen image of a recent exhibition space, literally inviting the user to “enter” both visually and with the mouse cursor.

What follows is a minimalist site that focuses on Adibi’s visually stunning paintings. The textures and patterns of each work flow together in a 4-column grid on the Works page, where the user can then click to view works individually within its series. On the project page, one can zoom in up to 200% to explore the texture and small details of each piece. Each work is linked to exhibitions where it’s been shown, where one can see photos and a description of the exhibit. About, Press, and the CV pages are kept simple to quietly live in complement to Adibi’s vibrant work.
